Norway raises cyber threat level as successful attacks triple
Norway’s National Security Authority (NSM) has raised the national cyber threat level to the second-highest level, reporting that successful cyberattacks against Norwegian organizations have tripled over the past six months.
NSM Director Arne Christian Haugstøyl stated that the decision to make this assessment public is intended to strengthen the resilience and management capabilities of Norwegian organizations. The agency identified the defense industry, the space sector, and critical infrastructure as particularly vulnerable to risks.
Key threats identified include reconnaissance activity, ransomware, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. The NSM also highlighted the rapid development of artificial intelligence as a serious risk, noting that AI can identify vulnerabilities faster than humans and allow attackers to operate at a larger scale.
In response to the heightened threat, the NSM has proposed 21 measures for Norwegian businesses to implement to improve digital resilience.
