Norway records 70 road deaths in first half of 2024, minister calls for safety push

Transport Minister Jon‑Ivar Nygård warned that Norway’s summer traffic season has already claimed 70 lives this year, with 18 fatalities in July alone. He highlighted a worrying trend among young drivers, noting that 16 people under 25 have died – the highest number for that age group in a decade. Motorcyclist deaths remain a concern, with 26 riders killed in 2025 and 15 so far in 2026, all of them men.

Nygård urged parents to set a good example and educate their children about road safety, emphasizing the need to avoid distractions, speeding, and driving under the influence. He called for stronger traffic‑safety measures and better road standards to reverse the summer‑season accident trend.
