Norway regional services face potential cuts in healthcare and aviation

Various regional concerns are being raised in Norway regarding the reduction of essential services in northern and central districts. In Levanger, local debate has emerged following Helse Midt-Norge’s decision to withdraw agreements for ophthalmology services at the local eye center. This decision, prompted by the retirement of two ophthalmologists, is expected to lead to the closure of the Eye Center in Levanger. Critics argue that the capacity at Namsos Hospital is insufficient to compensate for the loss of approximately 11,500 annual consultations, potentially placing a burden on elderly and disabled patients who must travel longer distances.

Simultaneously, NHO Arktis is opposing proposals to remove scheduled flight routes and potentially close Vardø Airport in East Finnmark. An investigation by Oslo Economics suggests transferring traffic from Vardø to Vadsø as an efficiency measure. Geir Håvard Hanssen, regional director of NHO Arktis, argues that such cuts would harm local businesses, recruitment, and regional preparedness. However, the report does suggest strengthening flight connections between Hasvik and Tromsø to support the tourism industry and local accessibility.
