Norway reports highest road fatalities in ten years

Norway has recorded 95 traffic fatalities so far in 2026, marking the highest death toll in ten years. September was the deadliest month of the year, with twelve fatalities, half of whom were under the age of 30.

The increase is particularly notable in passenger car accidents and collisions on county roads. Bård Hoksrud, leader of the parliamentary transport committee, has criticized the government for a 150 billion NOK maintenance backlog and called for improvements to dangerous road sections.

Transport Minister Kamzy Gunaratnam described the figures as “scary high” and emphasized that the government is prioritizing traffic safety through long-term, knowledge-based measures to reverse this trend.
