Norway reports increasing deaths in maritime and road traffic accidents in 2026

The Norwegian Maritime Authority reported three fatalities in the first half of 2026, including one crew member who fell overboard from a waiting cargo ship and two deaths after a fishing vessel capsized. Overall maritime incidents rose 28 % year‑on‑year, with 420 accidents and 191 near‑misses recorded, six vessels lost and a marked increase in contact‑damage and environmental incidents. Director Alf Tore Sørheim reiterated the agency’s “zero‑vision” goal for fatalities.

In parallel, Norway’s road safety agency noted eight traffic deaths in ten days during July 2026, bringing the year‑to‑date road death toll to 53 – seven more than the same period last year. Four of the victims were motor‑cyclists. Officials identified speed, inattention and alcohol as common factors and called for greater driver caution, enhanced controls and use of safety equipment.
