Norway retail: Christmas soda sales begin as canned versions trend

Retailers in Norway have begun rolling out seasonal Christmas soda, known as ‘julebrus’, in stores as of October 5. The product is a significant seasonal staple, with major chains reporting high volumes of sales.

Retail trends indicate a growing preference for canned versions of the drink, which are growing faster in popularity than glass bottles. While plastic bottles remain the largest in volume, cans are approaching parity with glass. Additionally, while sugar-free growth has leveled off, consumers are increasingly seeking products with fewer additives.

Sales figures from Norgesgruppen chains show substantial demand; Meny sold approximately 1.4 million liters last year, while Kiwi sold nearly 5.4 million liters. Industry data suggests the total volume per person in Norway likely exceeds one liter.
