Norway's Royal Family: Succession and King Harald V's Legacy

Following the death of King Harald V, the Norwegian Royal House has released details regarding his final resting place and the transition of the monarchy. King Haakon VIII has ascended the throne, with Princess Ingrid Alexandra serving as the heir.

The Royal House unveiled images of the King's sarcophagus, located in the royal mausoleum. The vessel is crafted from olivine stone from the Sunnmøre region, chosen for its ability to absorb and bind CO2 as a symbol of environmental care. The design, created by the architecture firm Snøhetta, features a rounded bottom inspired by the King's lifelong connection to the sea. The project, which cost approximately 1.85 million euros, was designed to eventually accommodate Queen Sonja as well.

Concurrently, the royal family faces legal and inheritance developments. Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Queen Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, is scheduled for a retrial on February 9, 2027, to review convictions related to rape and abuse. Regarding the King's estate, which includes significant real estate and jewelry valued in the hundreds of millions, Queen Sonja is the primary heir, followed by King Haakon VIII and Princess Märtha Louise. Marius Borg Høiby is not legally required to be included in the inheritance.
