Norway sees 17% rise in Chinese tourists amid shifting travel trends
The Chinese outbound tourism market is undergoing significant structural shifts, characterized by a growing demand for high-quality, immersive experiences and a heightened focus on safety. According to data from the China Tourism Academy, Chinese travelers are increasingly moving away from traditional multi-country tours toward deep, single-destination explorations.
Norway has emerged as a notable beneficiary of this trend. The Norway National Tourism Board reported a 17% year-on-year increase in Chinese tourists through July 2026, making China the second-largest source market for Norway. Travelers are increasingly seeking seasonal experiences such as the aurora borealis and winter landscapes, with aurora season visits doubling compared to 2019 levels. The tourism board is also leveraging sports culture, specifically the popularity of footballer Erling Haaland, to create specialized fan itineraries.
Experts note that social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin have largely eliminated information gaps, allowing travelers to make decisions based on granular details like local lifestyle and safety narratives. As safety has become a primary deciding factor for travelers, the industry is seeing a push toward more transparent, customized, and reliable service models to meet the expectations of both Gen Z and the emerging silver economy.
