Norway sees highest summer traffic death toll in a decade

In July 2024, 18 people were killed in traffic accidents on Norwegian roads, bringing the year‑to‑date total to 70 deaths – the highest number recorded since 2016. Motorcyclists were the hardest hit, with eight fatalities in July, the most since 2010, and young men on motorcycles accounting for a large share of the deaths.

The counties of Vestfold and Innlandet each recorded four deaths, the highest regional totals for the month. The most common accident types were head‑on collisions (ten deaths) and run‑off‑road incidents (seven deaths). The transport safety authority Trygg Trafikk cited excessive speed as a likely contributing factor.

Transport Minister Jon‑Ivar Nygård urged stronger road‑safety measures, emphasizing the need for responsible driving, especially among young people. He noted that 16 people under 25 have already died this year, the highest in that age group for ten years, and called on parents to model safe behaviour.
