Norway enters new era as King Haakon VIII ascends the throne
King Harald V of Norway passed away on August 28 at the age of 89. Following his death, his son, King Haakon VIII, was sworn in as the new monarch three days later. The event prompted Norway to declare its first official national period of mourning, which lasted until the funeral held two weeks later at Akershus Fortress.
The funeral procession included 3,500 soldiers, with 1,900 serving as an honor guard. Attendees included Prime Minister Gahr Støre, various foreign heads of state such as President Zelenskyj, and the monarchs of Sweden and Denmark.
During the mourning period, the Labor Party and the Progress Party established a political 'truce' to abstain from political debate. However, this truce was challenged by the Center Party following the removal of fuel tax relief on September 1. Additionally, planned celebrations for Queen Sonja's 90th birthday have been cancelled. The monarchy also faces ongoing scrutiny regarding the health of Queen Mette-Marit and the legal proceedings involving Marius Borg.
