Norway Supreme Court to rule on release of 74-year-old prisoner

The Supreme Court of Norway is set to decide next week whether a 74-year-old man, convicted of violent crimes and sexual offenses, can be released from preventive detention. The man has been imprisoned for 30 years and has spent much of that time at the Ila Prison and Detention Centre.

In March, the Borgarting Court of Appeal ruled against his release, citing concerns that he might still pose a risk to vulnerable individuals. The case has been appealed to the Supreme Court, which must now weigh the risk of recidivism against the man's advanced age and deteriorating health.

The defendant suffers from several serious medical conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems, and has survived multiple strokes. He also faces significant physical impairments, including blindness in one eye and severely limited mobility, requiring the use of a walker and wheelchair.
