Norway to continue Arctic oil and gas drilling despite EU moratorium stance

Norway has announced its intention to continue oil and gas exploration and development in the Barents Sea, regardless of the European Union's stance on an Arctic drilling moratorium. Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland stated that continuing activities in the Arctic is a sovereign right and serves both Norwegian and European interests, particularly regarding energy security in the current geopolitical climate.

Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Norway has become Europe's largest natural gas supplier, covering approximately 30% of the demand for the EU and the United Kingdom. While Norwegian gas production recently reached near-record levels and oil production hit its highest point since 2009, official forecasts suggest a significant decline in production after 2030 unless new resources are developed.

To mitigate this, the Norwegian government aims to maintain current production and export levels until at least 2035. Aasland also noted that Norway no longer views itself as the 'green battery' of Europe. While the EU currently supports a moratorium on new Arctic drilling for environmental reasons, it is reportedly reviewing its policy in response to energy security concerns. Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency has also called on the EU to reconsider its opposition to Arctic projects to ensure future energy stability.
