Norway to continue Barents Sea drilling for energy security
Norway is moving forward with oil and gas drilling in the Barents Sea, despite the European Union's support for a moratorium on Arctic hydrocarbon supplies. Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland stated that continuing activities in the Barents Sea serves both Norwegian and European interests within the current geopolitical and security context.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Norway has become Europe’s primary natural gas supplier, meeting approximately 30% of the continent's demand. While the EU promotes the Green Deal and seeks to reduce fossil fuel dependency, Norway—a member of the European Economic Area but not the EU—is prioritizing energy security through continued resource development.
