Norway to cover menopause hormone therapy on blue prescriptions
The Norwegian Directorate for Medical Products (DMP) has announced that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) will be covered under the blue prescription scheme for women experiencing specific symptoms. The decision follows a review of research confirming the effectiveness of MHT for treating hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
To qualify for coverage, healthcare professionals must determine that a patient's quality of life is significantly reduced by these symptoms. The scheme will include approved medications such as tablets, pills, gels, sprays, and patches. The expansion is estimated to cost the Norwegian state between 65.4 and 86.4 million NOK annually and is scheduled to take effect on December 1, 2026.
However, the decision has met with criticism from the women's organization Sanitetskvinnene. General Secretary Kari Helene Partapuoli stated that the criteria remain too narrow, noting that common symptoms like sleep disturbances and cognitive issues will not qualify for coverage. The organization continues to advocate for broader access and increased funding.
