Norway to develop new strategy against hate speech
The Norwegian government has announced it will begin developing a new strategy to combat hate speech, which is scheduled for presentation in 2027. Culture and Equality Minister Lubna Jaffery stated that the initiative aims to consolidate measures currently spread across various departments to ensure all citizens can participate in democratic debate.
As part of the immediate response, the government is allocating four million NOK to libraries to create meeting spaces for youth to discuss and learn about democracy. The announcement follows concerns regarding rising threats, harassment, and incitement to violence in public discourse.
The move comes amid personal challenges faced by political figures, such as Socialist Left Party (SV) deputy leader Marian Hussein, who has considered stepping down from leadership due to years of racism, harassment, and threats. Hussein noted that the burden of such treatment has led her to decline participation in public debates.
