Norway to hold parliamentary hearing over Epstein-related diplomatic ties

The Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) is preparing a hearing scheduled for September 30 to investigate the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' handling of information related to Jeffrey Epstein. The inquiry will examine the connections between Norwegian diplomats and the convicted sex offender, the control of aid funds, and the use of networks to advance Norwegian international interests.

Former Development Minister Erik Solheim has criticized the upcoming hearing as an “absurd overreaction” that will result in “more bureaucracy, less peace” and potentially damage Norwegian interests by making diplomats more fearful of making mistakes.

In contrast, Finansavisen editor Trygve Hegnar has questioned whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was sufficiently vigilant during the tenure of officials like Terje Rød-Larsen and Mona Juul. Hegnar noted that the International Peace Institute (IPI), led by Rød-Larsen from 2005 to 2020, received approximately 130 million NOK from Norwegian authorities between 1997 and 2018. Rød-Larsen has previously acknowledged receiving a private loan from Epstein.

Committee rapporteur Jonas Andersen Sayed defended the hearing, stating it is natural for Parliament to seek clarity regarding the contacts between Norwegian politicians, diplomats, and Epstein to ensure adequate routines are in place.
