Norway records surge in traffic deaths and accidents in 2026

Norway’s road safety figures for 2026 show a marked increase in fatalities. By mid‑year, 52 people had been killed in traffic incidents, up six from the same period last year. The rise is especially pronounced in Akershus county, where 15 deaths have been recorded – roughly three times the number of the previous year.

June alone saw ten fatalities nationwide, while the start of the holiday season has already produced a “collision day” on 1 July, when 2 486 vehicle accidents were reported, costing insurers more than 70 million kroner. Officials attribute the upward trend to driver distraction, particularly mobile‑phone use, and have warned that higher traffic volumes during the summer amplify the risk.

Transport authorities are urging motorists to reduce speed, avoid multitasking behind the wheel, and pay close attention to road signs and speed limits. The government and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration stress that stricter enforcement and public awareness are needed to reverse the growing death toll before the peak holiday period.
