Norway to implement new snus packaging regulations
New tobacco regulations set to take effect on March 11 next year will mandate significant changes to snus packaging in Norway. Following the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD2) and the Norwegian Tobacco Act, manufacturers must remove flavor-based names such as Mint, Strawberry, Melon, Ice, and Jalapeño from their products.
To comply, flavor references must be replaced with alternative identifiers like numbers, colors, or other designations. The primary objective of these changes is to prevent product names and packaging from creating a misleading impression regarding health risks.
Industry representatives, including Kim Nilsen of Snuslageret, have expressed concerns that the sudden transition may confuse consumers. While companies like British American Tobacco and Imperial Brands have criticized the lack of clear government guidelines, they have stated they will follow the regulations. There is ongoing debate regarding whether these changes will effectively reduce snus use among young people.
