Norway budget leaks reveal increased defense and space spending
Leaked details from the Norwegian government's 2027 state budget proposal reveal significant increases in defense and security spending. A primary focus is the Intelligence Service (E-tjenesten), which is set to receive an additional 400 million NOK to enhance situational awareness and monitoring of Russian military activity, particularly in the Arctic and the Kola Peninsula.
Other major allocations include 323.3 million NOK for a new launch pad at Andøya Spaceport, intended to bolster European space access, and 700 million NOK for institutional child welfare. The budget also proposes 465 million NOK for primary education support and 120 million NOK to combat youth crime.
Additionally, the government plans to invest 94 million NOK in a domestic precision timekeeping system to reduce reliance on satellite-based GPS, which has faced disruptions from Russian interference. Regarding international aid, the Nansen Program for Ukraine has been increased to at least 274.5 billion NOK for the 2023–2030 period, though former minister Erik Solheim has warned of corruption risks associated with these large fund flows.
