Norway to introduce recycled aluminum license plates

Norway is set to implement a new initiative for vehicle license plates starting in December. According to Statens vegvesen, all new standard white license plates will be manufactured using at least 40 percent recycled aluminum.

The project follows extensive testing involving various vehicle types, including private cars and heavy trucks, to ensure durability in harsh Norwegian weather conditions. The transition aims to support circular economy goals set by the Miljødirektoratet, as recycling aluminum requires significantly less energy than primary production.

With approximately 700,000 new license plates ordered annually in Norway, the environmental impact is expected to be substantial. The initiative is estimated to provide an annual emissions saving equivalent to roughly 1,700 round-trip flights between Oslo and New York.
