Norway to Open Sigrid Undset Canonization Cause This Fall

Preparations are under way in Norway to formally open a canonization cause for Nobel Prize‑winning novelist Sigrid Undset, announced by Bishop Fredrik Hansen of Oslo on July 8. The cause, expected to begin in the fall, will grant Undset the title “Servant of God” and could eventually lead to beatification and canonization pending papal‑approved miracles.

Undset, born in Denmark in 1882 and raised in Norway, received the 1928 Nobel Prize for Literature for her vivid portrayals of medieval Norwegian life. She converted to Catholicism in 1924, became a Third Order Dominican, and during World War II advocated for Norwegian resistance while in New York. After the war she returned to Norway, where she died in 1949. Bishop Hansen presented the initiative to the Nordic Bishops’ Conference before announcing it at a Mass celebrating St. Sunniva on the island of Selja.
