Norway tourism sees record August stays despite winter booking uncertainty
Norway's tourism sector experienced a record-breaking summer in August, according to Statistics Norway. The country recorded 5.5 million overnight stays in August, a 0.4 percent increase compared to the same month last year. This growth was primarily driven by international visitors, which saw a 2.6 percent increase, while domestic overnight stays declined by 1.3 percent.
Hotels specifically saw a 3 percent increase in stays, with approximately 3.4 million recorded. Two out of five hotel stays in August were by foreign tourists, with the highest growth coming from visitors from Germany and Poland. Oslo recorded the highest number of hotel stays at over 677,000, followed by Vestland with nearly 641,000.
Despite the successful summer, outlooks for the winter season appear more uncertain. Data from NHO Reiseliv indicates that booking levels for winter are mixed; 37 percent of hotel and accommodation businesses report lower booking levels than last year, while only 18 percent report improvements. The nightlife sector is particularly affected, and many regions, such as Trøndelag and Innlandet, are seeing a decline in winter bookings. Uncertainty remains regarding international guest numbers for the upcoming winter season.
