Norway urged to increase humanitarian aid and UNHCR funding
Norwegian humanitarian organizations and political actors are calling for increased foreign aid to address rising global needs. Caritas Norway has expressed concern that the government's proposed aid budget falls short of the target of one percent of GNI, noting a gap of over four billion NOK.
Caritas Norway is urging the Storting to prioritize humanitarian efforts and protection, requesting an additional one billion NOK to assist those affected by war, conflict, and displacement. The organization also advocates for shifting more resources and decision-making power to local actors to strengthen long-term poverty alleviation and food security.
Simultaneously, the Green Party (MDG) is calling on Norway to increase support for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The UNHCR is facing a severe funding crisis, with an estimated 5.8 billion USD shortfall for 2026. Experts warn that approximately 8.3 million refugees could lose essential assistance if funding levels do not improve, as the organization currently has only covered about one-third of its projected needs.
