Norway water damage claims rise by 14 percent

Water damage claims in Norwegian homes and cabins increased by 14 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, according to data from Finans Norge. The insurance industry has already paid out over 2.2 billion NOK in water damage claims during this period.

Tryg Forsikring has issued a warning to homeowners and cabin owners to prepare for upcoming autumn storms and heavy rainfall. Experts note that many significant damages occur when intense precipitation tests the integrity of buildings. Common causes include clogged gutters, leaking roofs, overloaded drains, and inadequate basement protection.

To mitigate risks, authorities and insurers recommend several preventive measures, such as cleaning gutters and downspouts, ensuring water is directed away from foundations toward green areas, and checking roof tiles and basement seals. There is a specific concern that municipal sewage systems may struggle to handle extreme volumes of rainwater during heavy downpours.
