Norway's aging citizens confront housing shortage and health risks
In Norway, people over 60 worry about a future of limited housing, social isolation and the threat of institutional care. Experts warn that many municipalities lack the infrastructure to support an ageing population, and advocates call for compact, mixed‑use neighbourhoods that bring services within walking distance for both the elderly and younger residents. The lack of affordable homes and the pressure of climate change add to concerns about how seniors will cope.
Health officials also caution older adults about a common bathroom hazard: hot showers. Warm water can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness, or falls, especially for those with hypertension, diabetes or heart disease. Recommended water temperatures are 37‑40 °C, with short showers, non‑slip mats and grab‑bars advised to reduce injury risk.
