Norway's anti‑nuclear poll and Denmark's parliamentary split on UN ban amid NATO ties

A survey commissioned by Norsk Folkehjelp found that 76 % of Norwegians oppose nuclear weapons and want Norway to join the United Nations treaty banning them. The poll, conducted in June 2026 with 1,051 respondents, also showed strong support for active diplomatic efforts to achieve mutual nuclear disarmament.

In Denmark, a parliamentary vote on a proposal to sign the same UN ban was rejected by a majority of parties. Only the left‑wing Enhedslisten and Alternativet voted in favour. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen argued that Denmark’s NATO membership makes it impossible to endorse a treaty that would prohibit the possession of nuclear weapons, a stance echoed by other coalition parties.
