Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit Receives Lung Transplant After 12-Day Wait

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, was placed on the national organ‑waiting list in early June 2026. Twelve days later, she underwent a successful lung transplantation at the Rikshospitalet in Oslo, a turnaround described by doctors as "rarely seen".

The procedure was performed by the thoracic surgery team led by Arnt Fiane, who said, "The transplantation has so far proceeded successfully." Pulmonologist Are Holm emphasized that the allocation system follows strict medical criteria – urgency, size match, blood type and antibody compatibility – and that no preferential treatment was given to the royal family. The Norwegian organ‑donor network, Scandiatransplant, typically sees a six‑month waiting period for lungs, but the princess's case prompted a surge of 12,000 new donor registrations within a month.

Following the operation, the princess entered a convalescence and rehabilitation period at the hospital and will not resume official duties until cleared by physicians. The royal household will provide further updates after her discharge.
