Norway's Haaland honors family on World Cup jersey as Netherlands clarifies name

Erling Haaland appeared in Norway's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Iraq with the name "Braut Haaland" on his No. 9 shirt, a tribute to both his father Alf‑Inge Haaland and his mother Gry Marita Braut. Haaland scored two goals in the 4‑1 victory, marking Norway's return to the tournament after a 28‑year absence.

The Dutch team is officially referred to as the Países Bajos (Netherlands) rather than Holland, a name that applies only to the two coastal provinces of North and South Holland. Coached by Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands will seek a win in their upcoming group match against Sweden.
