Norway's IMDi expands refugee integration tools and settlement requests

The Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi) has requested that Tromsø municipality prepare to settle 120 refugees next year. This includes eight spots designated for unaccompanied minors over the age of 15. While the national goal is to settle 8,680 refugees next year—a lower figure than in previous years—IMDi emphasized that the need for placement remains significant. Municipalities that facilitate settlement receive state grants to cover integration and follow-up costs.

To improve the integration process, IMDi is launching a new survey starting October 19, 2026, designed to gather feedback from recent immigrants regarding Norwegian language training and introduction programs. To ensure accessibility for those with limited Norwegian proficiency, the survey will be available in 23 different languages and will feature both text and audio options. The goal is to collect data that helps municipalities refine their services and better support refugees in entering the workforce or education.
