Norway holds state funeral for King Harald V in Oslo

Norway held a state funeral for King Harald V on September 9, 2026, in Oslo, marking the end of 13 days of national mourning following his death at age 89. The ceremony at Oslo Cathedral was attended by approximately 850 official guests, including numerous European monarchs such as the kings and queens of Spain, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as Prince William and Princess Anne of the United Kingdom. International leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, were also in attendance.

The funeral procession traveled from the Royal Palace to the cathedral, accompanied by cannon fire from Akershus Fortress. Tens of thousands of citizens lined the streets of Oslo to pay their respects. Following the religious service, the King was interred in the royal crypt at Akershus Fortress in a private ceremony.

In parallel developments, the Oslo Court of Appeal has admitted an appeal by Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Queen Mette-Marit. Høiby, who attended the funeral under special permission while in custody, was previously sentenced to four years in prison for crimes including two counts of rape. The appeal will lead to a new trial to review his convictions and the length of his sentence.
