Norway's Labor Party outlines nature conservation strategy

The Norwegian Labor Party has emphasized the need for a balanced nature policy that reconciles environmental protection with the demand for housing, infrastructure, and renewable energy. The party advocates for smarter land use, prioritizing the development of already utilized areas over the destruction of new natural habitats.

As part of Norway's commitment to the global nature agreement, the government aims to protect 30 percent of its land area, including Svalbard and Jan Mayen, by 2030. Currently, 25.8 percent of the land is protected. To support these goals, the government has introduced a national map of 'grey areas'—previously developed or heavily impacted lands—to assist municipalities in choosing densification and reuse over new construction. Additionally, a land neutrality committee has been established to study methods for limiting nature loss and restoring degraded ecosystems.
