Norway's Right to Roam and German Immigration Rules Outline Outdoor Access and Residency

Norway grants a legal right called Allemannsretten, allowing anyone to camp on uncultivated land more than 150 metres from houses without permission. The law permits free‑range outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking and wild camping across the country’s fjords, forests and mountains, provided campers respect local restrictions and practice responsible use.

German citizens seeking to move to Norway must navigate a different set of rules. Although Norway is not a member of the EU, it participates in the European Economic Area, allowing EU nationals to enter visa‑free with a passport or ID for stays up to three months. Longer stays or permanent residency require compliance with Norwegian immigration regulations, a factor frequently underestimated by prospective German migrants. About 26,000 Germans already live in Norway, and new arrivals must meet the specific residence and work permit conditions set by Norwegian authorities.
