Norway's seafood consumption drops while export values surge

Norwegian per‑capita seafood consumption fell from 18.26 kg to 17.94 kg in the year, a 2 % decline from 2024 to 2025 and part of a 13.5 % drop over the past decade. Despite the decline, 75 % of Norwegians say they want to eat more fish, and Norway ranks ninth worldwide in seafood consumption. The Norwegian Seafood Council cited reduced cod quotas, higher prices and changing food trends as drivers, and announced a new diet partnership to boost intake.

In July, Norway’s seafood export value reached 15.6 billion NOK, up 13 % year‑on‑year, with volume rising 1 %. Salmon exports hit 11.6 billion NOK, a 16 % increase, and the price per kilogram rose 6 % to 71 NOK. Poland remained the largest salmon market, followed by China and the Netherlands. Klippfisk exports to Brazil fell 2 % due to lower seahake quotas, while Portugal stayed the top klippfisk destination. Export growth continued despite a stronger Norwegian krone.
