Norway’s Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, who has been living with chronic pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, has been placed on the official lung‑transplant waiting list as her condition rapidly deteriorates. The Royal Court reported that extensive medical assessments confirmed the seriousness of her lung disease and that she now meets the criteria for a transplant, which is considered the only long‑term solution.

Chief physician and lung specialist Are Holm of Rikshospitalet described the situation as “dangerous,” adding that patients on the list must be ill enough that they have about a year to live yet still healthy enough to endure the operation. The princess’s duties have been suspended, and Crown Prince Haakon has adjusted his schedule to support her, including cutting short a visit to Japan. The family emphasized that the princess will not receive priority over other patients on the transplant list.
