Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit Added to Lung Transplant Waiting List

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, who was diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, has been placed on the national lung‑transplant waiting list as her condition worsens. Doctors estimate she may have about a year left without a donor organ. The royal palace announced that she has suspended her official duties while awaiting surgery and will undergo a lengthy recovery afterwards.

Her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, cut short a diplomatic visit to Japan to be by her side, and their 22‑year‑old daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, returned from studies in Sydney to stay with her mother. The transplant procedure, performed only at Oslo University Hospital, typically lasts four to eight hours and requires months of post‑operative immunosuppression and monitoring.

The announcement also noted that Norway participates in the Scandiatransplant network, which coordinates organ allocation among several Nordic countries.
