Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit placed on lung transplant waiting list

Crown Princess Mette‑Marit of Norway, aged 52, has been added to the urgent lung‑transplant waiting list as her idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis has significantly worsened. The Royal House announced the development in early June 2026 and confirmed that the princess’s condition now requires a donor organ as soon as possible.

All of the princess’s official engagements have been cancelled, and Prince Haakon has reduced his own schedule, postponing state visits. Their children have altered their plans: Princess Ingrid Alexandra has returned early from university studies in Australia to remain in Oslo, while Prince Sverre Magnus has adjusted his academic arrangements to be available for family support. The hospitals in Oslo are coordinating the transplantation process and monitoring the princess closely.

The announcement has prompted a strong public response in Norway, reflecting the princess’s popularity and the royal family’s transparent handling of the health crisis.
