Crown Princess Mette‑Marit placed on lung‑transplant waiting list
Crown Princess Mette‑Marit of Norway, 52, has been listed for a lung transplant after her chronic pulmonary fibrosis worsened. The royal palace said the progression is serious, quoting lung specialist Are Holm: “The progression of the Crown Princess’s lung disease is serious… she has now been placed on the waiting list for patients who will undergo a lung transplant as soon as a suitable donor becomes available.”
The princess has been receiving oxygen support and has been hospitalized at Oslo’s Rikshospitalet, the only centre in Norway that performs lung transplants. Because donor lungs are scarce, the operation would have to be scheduled on short notice.
The health situation forced Crown Prince Haakon to cut short a state visit to Japan and to limit future travel. Their daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra returned from studies in Australia to be with her mother, and the royal family postponed their silver wedding anniversary in August and will miss the Swedish royal couple’s gold wedding celebrations.
