Norwegian Crown Princess' Son Marius Borg Høiby Sentenced to Four Years

Oslo District Court sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, to four years' imprisonment. The verdict covered 34 charges, including two counts of rape, assault, violations of a restraining order, serious drug offenses, traffic violations, and unlawful filming of women without consent. He was also ordered to pay 580,000 Norwegian kroner in damages. The prosecution had sought a seven‑year term, while the defence had asked for 1.5 years for the offenses Høiby admitted.

Høiby’s lawyer said the defendant intends to appeal the ruling, asserting his innocence. The case marks the first time a member of the modern Norwegian royal family has received a prison sentence, intensifying scrutiny of the royal household at a time when Crown Princess Mette‑Marit is battling severe lung disease and awaiting a transplantation.

Swedish media highlighted the sentencing as a “cold‑shower” for the royal family, noting its unprecedented nature in Norway’s recent history.
