Norwegian fishing representatives criticize fjord line exemptions

Representatives from the Centre Party (NSR), Henrik Olsen and Aslak Heika Hætta Bjørn, are calling for a review of exemption rules regarding fjord fishing lines in Norway. They argue that the Directorate of Fisheries is undermining the purpose of these lines by granting dispensations to the herring fleet.

The fjord lines were established to ensure sustainable harvesting and protect the resource base for local populations. Under these regulations, vessels over 15 meters are generally prohibited from fishing within the lines, and the use of active gear that can rapidly deplete fish stocks is restricted.

However, the Directorate has utilized exemption provisions to allow herring seiners access to fjords such as Kvænangen in North Troms and West Finnmark since October 16. The NSR representatives claim this creates an uneven playing field, as local small-scale fishers must adhere to strict limitations while larger vessels gain access to traditional fishing grounds, resulting in a loss of freedom of movement and resource access for the local fleet.
