Norwegian food industry faces new climate funding and EU packaging rules

NorgesGruppen has announced a continuation of the HANDLE sustainability fund, allocating an additional 100 million NOK to support climate projects within the Norwegian food value chain. The fund, which has distributed nearly 100 million NOK to over 40 projects since 2021, aims to accelerate progress toward 2030 climate goals by focusing on emission reductions, soil health, and food waste reduction. CEO Runar Hollevik emphasized the need for collaborative, practical development projects that involve multiple stages of the value chain.

Simultaneously, new EU packaging regulations (PPWR) are set to impact Norwegian businesses, potentially increasing costs for packaging solutions. The regulations cover design, production, labeling, and recycling. While the Norwegian Directorate for Environmental Protection has proposed exemptions for beverage packaging, fruit, vegetables, and plastic bags to protect existing systems like the Norwegian deposit scheme, the NHO warns that implementation must be cost-effective. The new rules include mandates to limit packaging volume and weight, avoid hazardous chemicals, and ensure recyclability, with strict oversight and potential fines for non-compliance.
