Norwegian Government Reverses Plan to Cut School Audio Books

The Norwegian government had prepared to withdraw state‑provided audio books from nearly 10,000 pupils, many of whom rely on the material for reading and writing support due to dyslexia or other learning difficulties. Following intense public and political pressure, the decision was reversed and the audio‑book programme will continue.

Venstre politician Christian Holstad Lilleng criticised the original proposal, arguing that shifting responsibility to municipalities without guaranteeing resources would leave vulnerable students without essential assistance. He called for the government to secure adequate funding and for local authorities, such as Haram municipality, to be prepared to meet the needs of these learners.

The reversal underscores the importance of consistent support for students with reading challenges and signals ongoing scrutiny of education policy by opposition parties.
