Norwegian grocery retailers' price wars impact consumer costs
Price competition among major Norwegian discount retailers Kiwi, Rema 1000, and Coop Extra can influence consumer costs depending on the timing of weekly shopping. Expert Rune Nikolaisen suggests that shoppers may save money by waiting until Monday afternoon to complete their grocery runs. This delay allows retailers time to react to competitors' new weekly offers and adjust their own prices accordingly.
In addition to timing, significant price discrepancies exist between brand-name products and store-brand alternatives. For example, a price comparison of black pepper showed that brand-name options can be up to 150 percent more expensive per kilogram than a retailer's own private label. Retailers report increased sales of spices like pepper during the autumn and holiday seasons as consumers prepare traditional dishes.
