Norwegian kindergarten start: experts urge parents to allow time and maintain dialogue

The start of the new kindergarten term in Norway is imminent, with thousands of children set to begin attendance next week. Anita Holm Cirotzki, a kindergarten teacher and board member of the Utdanningsforbundet, advises parents to keep open communication with the kindergarten staff and to let each child adjust at its own pace.

Key recommendations include giving children calm and time to feel secure, foregoing any “fancy” equipment, labeling clothing, and allowing a small comfort item such as a plush toy if needed. Parents are encouraged to share relevant information about their child’s needs with the teachers and, if desired, arrange brief daily check‑ins to stay informed without disrupting the staff’s workload.
