Norwegian military vehicles recorded sensitive data during exercise

During a Norwegian military security exercise at Oslo Airport between September 14 and 18, soldiers discovered that rental vehicles had recorded sensitive information via onboard cameras and sensors. The footage reportedly captured personnel movements, transit routes, and numerical access codes used to open gates and doors at military installations.

The vehicles involved included at least two Deepal brand cars manufactured by Changan, a Chinese state-controlled automaker. The cars were supplied to the military by Hertz Norge, which is indirectly owned by the Chinese automotive group Geely. While it remains unverified if the data was transmitted to external third parties or to China, Norwegian authorities have not ruled out the possibility.

Despite the discovery, the military continued to use the vehicles until the conclusion of the exercise due to a lack of alternative transport options. Soldiers subsequently deleted the stored video files. Rather than implementing a broad ban on Chinese-manufactured vehicles, Norwegian defense authorities indicated a preference for site-specific security restrictions and local bans on vehicles equipped with cameras and sensors, regardless of their country of origin.
