Norwegian monarchy sees highest public support in 25 years

Support for the Norwegian monarchy has reached its highest level in 25 years, according to a Verian poll conducted for TV 2 Norge. The survey shows that 77.6 percent of Norwegians with an opinion prefer a monarchy, while 22.4 percent favor a republic.

This surge in popularity follows a turbulent period for the royal house, which included the deaths of King Harald and Princess Astrid, as well as public scrutiny regarding Mette-Marit and Marius Borg Høiby. Experts note that King Haakon’s decision to address difficult family matters directly and his visible leadership during the transition have contributed to increased public trust. Following the arrest of Marius Borg Høiby in 2024, the percentage of people believing the monarchy's position had strengthened rose from 2.9 percent to 18.9 percent.
