Norwegian Princess Mette-Marit Recovers After Successful Lung Transplant

Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, 52, underwent a successful lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital. She had been diagnosed in 2018 with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis that threatened her breathing and gave doctors an estimated one‑year life expectancy without surgery. The transplant was performed after she was placed on the hospital’s waiting list in early June, and physicians said she will remain in hospital for several more weeks as she continues to recover.

The Norwegian prime minister praised her decision to speak openly about her illness, noting that her example could help others facing similar conditions. The operation took place just days after her son, Marius Borg Høiby, was convicted of rape, a circumstance noted in the palace’s announcement.

The royal family expressed gratitude for the medical team’s work and indicated that Princess Mette-Marit is now in a stable recovery phase.
