Norwegian professor warns of lingering effects after rainy summer

A prolonged period of gray and rainy weather across parts of Norway this summer has raised concerns about its impact on mental well‑being. Professor Hans M. Nordahl, a doctor of philosophy and professor of medical behavioural science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), explained that while a cold, wet summer does not typically cause widespread psychological problems, individual reactions can vary. He noted that reduced outdoor activity, fewer social interactions and limited daylight can lead to lower energy levels and a sense of missed respite as autumn begins.

To mitigate these effects, Nordahl recommends actively compensating for the lost summer benefits by seeking daylight exposure even on overcast days, maintaining regular physical activity, preserving social contacts, planning enjoyable outings, and avoiding rumination over the “ruined” summer. These steps can help restore mood and prevent longer‑term declines as daylight continues to decrease.
