Norwegian Refugee Council warns of Gaza humanitarian crisis

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has issued a warning regarding a looming humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip as the region enters its fourth winter. Approximately 1.65 million Palestinians are at risk of facing extreme weather in dilapidated tents or damaged buildings.

The NRC reports that Israeli authorities have restricted the entry of essential shelter supplies for over seven months. Currently, only about 15 trucks per week containing materials classified as 'dual-use' are permitted through the Kerem Shalom crossing, and even these are only allowed in on one day per week. Essential construction materials, including wood, cement, and metal sheets, are reportedly being blocked entirely.

At least 500 trucks loaded with shelter supplies are currently awaiting entry. At the current rate of delivery, it could take more than seven months to process these goods. Furthermore, a significant funding gap exists; while $283 million is needed for a minimum response, donors have provided only $96.2 million, leaving a deficit of $186.6 million. Current stocks are estimated to support only 52,000 families out of the 294,000 in need.
