Norwegian regulator warns of risks on Roblox platform
The Norwegian Media Authority (Medietilsynet) has released a report titled ‘Roblox under radaren’, highlighting significant risks posed by the gaming platform to children and adolescents. The analysis suggests that the platform’s design prioritizes profit over the well-being of young users through mechanisms that encourage addiction and impulsive spending.
Key concerns include the use of virtual currency, Robux, which requires real money to purchase, and features that mimic gambling, such as loot boxes and paid progress restoration. The report also notes that the platform’s user-generated content can make it difficult for parents to monitor chats and control interactions with strangers. Despite safety features, experts found that children can easily bypass protections and communicate with adults without effective age verification.
In Norway, approximately 80 percent of children aged 9 to 12 use Roblox. Globally, the platform saw 85 million daily logins in 2024, with roughly 40 percent of those users under the age of 13.
