Marius Høiby Sentenced to Prison Over Rape Convictions, Appeals Verdict

Marius Høiby, 29, the eldest son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, was sentenced on 15 June to four years’ imprisonment for two counts of rape. He has lodged an appeal against the verdict.

Høiby had requested pre‑trial release to visit his severely ill mother, who recently underwent a lung transplant, but the court denied the request. Despite the denial, he visited the hospital on several occasions escorted by police. He is being held in Ila prison near Oslo, where inmates have access to television, a gym, a library and a garden, and are served a varied menu that includes Thai curry, pasta, and vegetarian options.

The Oslo public prosecutor’s office is seeking a longer sentence, arguing that the original term is insufficient. The case continues to draw public attention because of Høiby’s royal connections and his mother’s health condition.
